Vazgen Sargsyan served as Armenia’s Minister of Defense and Prime Minister in the 1990s and was the principal architect of the Armenian armed forces during the First Nagorno Karabakh War. Known by the honorific title Sparapet — an ancient Armenian term for supreme commander — he is widely credited with organizing the military that secured Armenian control over Karabakh in the early 1990s. He became Prime Minister in June 1999.
On October 27, 1999, Sargsyan was assassinated alongside National Assembly Speaker Karen Demirchyan and six others in a terrorist attack on the Armenian parliament. He was posthumously declared a National Hero of Armenia. His killing, attributed to a group of gunmen led by Nairi Hunanyan, remains one of the most traumatic events in post-independence Armenian history and continues to generate political controversy over the circumstances and motivations behind it.
Groong episodes referencing Vazgen Sargsyan address his military legacy, the 1999 parliament attack, and the political history of the first decade of Armenian independence, as well as the lingering questions about accountability and justice that the event left unresolved.
