Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 9, 2026

Groong Podcast (“we”, “us”) is a volunteer-run project. This policy describes what information is collected when you visit podcasts.groong.org or use the Groong Podcast app (the installable web app at app.groong.org and our native iOS/Android apps), how it is used, and what choices you have.

What we collect and why

Analytics

We use Google Analytics (ID: G-Q6HJ52LZ77) to understand how visitors use the site — which episodes are popular, how people find us, and how the site performs. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and sends data (including your IP address, browser type, and pages visited) to Google. This data is processed under Google’s Privacy Policy .

You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on or by enabling “Do Not Track” in your browser.

Comments (Disqus)

Episode pages include comments powered by Disqus. Disqus sets its own cookies and collects data about comment activity. If you do not use the comment section, Disqus may still load and set cookies on pages where it is embedded. Disqus data is processed under Disqus’s Privacy Policy .

Newsletter and email subscriptions

If you submit your email address via the subscription form on this site, we collect and store that address in order to send you the content you requested — the Weekly Digest (sent Mondays) and/or occasional Announcements (fewer than once per month). Your email address is stored with SendGrid, our email service provider, and processed under SendGrid’s Privacy Policy . We do not sell or share your address with any other third party. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also email info@groong.org to request removal at any time.

We also maintain a presence on Substack at substack.groong.org . If you subscribe there, your data is handled by Substack under Substack’s Privacy Policy .

Podcast hosting

Audio is hosted by Buzzsprout, which may collect listener analytics (approximate location, device type, listening app) when you stream or download episodes. This is processed under Buzzsprout’s Privacy Policy .

The Groong Podcast app

Our installable app (web at app.groong.org , and the native iOS/Android apps) handles data as follows:

  • Analytics — only with your consent. The app uses Google Analytics to understand how it is used (which episodes are opened, video/audio watch time, screen views, and standard metrics such as approximate location, device type, and referrers). Unlike the website, the app does not turn analytics on until you agree: a banner on first launch asks for your consent, and no Google Analytics cookies are set unless you accept. You can change your choice at any time from the app’s ⋮ → Privacy & analytics menu. This data is processed under Google’s Privacy Policy .

  • New-episode notifications — only if you opt in. If you tap the notification bell to turn on new-episode alerts, your browser’s push subscription (an anonymous identifier for your device’s notification channel, plus the keys needed to deliver a message) is stored by us using Cloudflare. We use it solely to notify you when a new episode is published, and it does not identify you personally. Tap the bell again to turn alerts off and the subscription is deleted. Notification delivery itself is handled by your browser or operating system’s push service (e.g. Google, Apple, or Mozilla). Cloudflare processes data under Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy .

  • Video playback. Episode video plays through an embedded YouTube player; when you play a video, YouTube/Google may set cookies and collect viewing data under Google’s Privacy Policy .

  • On-device storage. The app stores the episode list and your preferences (including your analytics choice) locally on your device so it works offline and remembers your settings. This stays on your device, is not sent to us, and is removed if you clear the app’s data or your browser storage.

Cookies

This site uses cookies set by Google Analytics and Disqus as described above. We do not set any first-party cookies ourselves. In the app, Google Analytics cookies are set only after you grant consent; if you decline, no analytics cookies are set.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Blocking cookies may affect how Google Analytics and Disqus function but will not affect your ability to read or listen to content on this site.

Data we do not collect

We do not collect your name or any personal information beyond what you voluntarily provide — when subscribing to our email lists, or when you opt into app notifications. We do not sell data to third parties.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding personal data we or our third-party processors hold. For email addresses you have submitted to our subscription lists, you can request access, correction, or deletion by emailing info@groong.org and we will action your request within 30 days. For data held by our other processors (Google Analytics, Disqus, Substack, Buzzsprout, SendGrid, Cloudflare), contact each provider directly using the links to their privacy policies above. For app notifications, you can delete the stored push subscription yourself at any time by turning the notification bell off in the app.
