The Meritocratic Party of Armenia (Shnorhapatakan Kusaktsutyun) is led by Gurgen Simonyan, a figure who emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the more talked-about personalities of the 2026 election cycle. Running on a platform of technocratic, merit-based governance and a total rejection of both the current government and the old guard of Armenian politics, Simonyan built a following through social media campaigning and Facebook Live sessions that reached audiences in both Armenia and the diaspora.

The party is considered one of the most explicitly anti-Russian forces in the 2026 election field, advocating for Armenia to cease cooperation with Russian-led structures. Simonyan has gone further than most, raising the prospect of Armenia eventually pursuing NATO membership — a position well outside the mainstream of even the pro-Western camp. Despite having no program submitted to the Central Election Commission, Simonyan’s personal appeal generated polling numbers in the low single digits, with the IRI poll reportedly giving him more support than the MPG poll. On Groong’s geopolitical heatmap of the 2026 parties, the Meritocratic Party is grouped with Civil Contract and the Republic Party on the pro-Western end of the spectrum — a positioning the hosts noted could make it useful to Pashinyan if it clears the 4% threshold.

Groong covered the Meritocratic Party in depth in Episode 548, which walked through all 19 participants in the June 7, 2026 elections and described Simonyan as a potential dark horse — a candidate with strong diaspora appeal and growing momentum that few had anticipated a year earlier.
