Lilit Makunts has served as Armenia’s Ambassador to the United States since 2021, becoming one of the most visible faces of Armenia’s diplomatic presence in Washington during a period of significant foreign policy reorientation. A former Civil Contract member of the National Assembly, she was appointed to the ambassadorial role as the Pashinyan government deepened its engagement with American and Western institutions following the 44-Day War.

As ambassador during a critical period — encompassing the September 2023 Azerbaijani offensive against Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh), the ethnic cleansing of 150,000 Armenians, and the subsequent intensification of Armenia’s Western partnerships — Makunts has been a key channel for Armenian diplomacy in the United States, engaging with Congress, the State Department, and the Armenian-American diaspora.
