Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan is a senior figure within the Armenian Apostolic Church and a key ally of Catholicos Garegin II. He was arrested in December 2025 on charges of allegedly planting evidence on a protester — an accusation that critics described as a pretext to remove a prominent church figure close to the Catholicosate’s leadership.
His arrest came at the end of a year in which the Pashinyan government moved against multiple senior clergy, including Archbishops Bagrat Galstanyan and Mikayel Ajapahyan and Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan. Groong has covered Khachatryan’s arrest as part of its ongoing examination of the church-state conflict and the government’s escalating pressure on the Armenian Apostolic Church.
