Armenia and India have built a military and defense partnership that reflects India’s expanding strategic interests in the South Caucasus and Armenia’s need to diversify its defense relationships beyond Russia. The cooperation includes exports of Indian military hardware, most notably the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system, which has become a centerpiece of defense deals between the two nations. This partnership gained momentum as Armenia sought to strengthen its military capacity following the 44-Day War and the complete ethnic cleansing of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) of more than 150,000 Armenian inhabitants. Defense cooperation reflects not only Armenia’s security requirements but also India’s response to the emerging Turkey-Pakistan-Azerbaijan axis and its strategic positioning in a volatile region where Turkey and Pakistan coordinate closely with Azerbaijan.
India has positioned itself as a counterweight to this axis. In a June 2025 conversation with Abhinav Pandya on Groong, the discussion centered on how Armenia has become a strategic partner for India and how Indian responses to regional threats, including Operation Sindoor following a major terror attack in Pahalgam, connect to broader South Caucasus dynamics. Pandya outlined the ideological and hybrid threats India faces from the Turkey-Pakistan-Azerbaijan coordination and emphasized Armenia’s role in India’s regional strategy. The Pinaka system, which Armenia has acquired or is negotiating to acquire, represents a concrete expression of this partnership and strengthens Armenia’s air defense and strike capabilities at a time when Azerbaijan and Turkey maintain military pressure on its borders.
The Armenia-India military relationship operates within the context of Armenia-India Relations more broadly, which encompasses economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties. India’s defense exports to Armenia also signal New Delhi’s willingness to challenge traditional power dynamics in the region and to build relationships with nations that do not align exclusively with Russia or China. Whether this partnership can expand further, and whether Indian military cooperation with Armenia will influence the trajectory of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Process, remains an open question as Armenia navigates its strategic alignment between Russia, the West, and India.
