Graded F: South Carolina Republican Joe Wilson (R-02)

A self-styled defender of persecuted Christians who became a mouthpiece for Baku.

Hovik moves the discussion to South Carolina and asks about Joe Wilson. Hamparian describes him as a very senior House member who, from early in his congressional tenure, has been hostile to Armenian Americans. There was a brief window when Wilson first took office when he seemed open to dialogue, but Hamparian says Wilson shut that down and became what he calls a mouthpiece for Baku.

Hamparian notes that whatever Wilson says about the South Caucasus could just as easily be said by Ilham Aliyev. The sharpest point in the clip is the contrast between Wilson’s public image and his record. Wilson professes to defend religious freedom and persecuted Christian minorities, yet Hamparian argues he has done the opposite by becoming party to the persecution of Armenians, a historically Christian people.

The segment captures a recurring theme in ANCA’s grading: the gap between a legislator’s stated values and actual conduct. Hamparian calls Wilson’s record shameful and says the organization looks forward to his early retirement from Congress. For viewers tracking how U.S. lawmakers align on Armenia and Azerbaijan, Wilson stands as a case where rhetoric about Christian persecution does not translate into support for Armenians facing ethnic cleansing.

Hovik Manucharyan: All right, let's move to South Carolina. What can you tell us about Joe Wilson?

Aram Suren Hamparian: Joe Wilson is a very senior member of the House who has, from very early in his congressional tenure, been very hostile to Armenian-Americans. There was a short while when he first got sworn in where he was open to a dialogue with Armenian-Americans. But since then, he has shut that down and essentially been a mouthpiece for Baku. I don't know that he says much on the South Caucasus. That cannot also be said by Ilham Aliyev. For someone from South Carolina, for someone who professes to be a defender of religious freedom and persecuted minorities, persecuted Christians, he's done just the opposite. He has been a party to the persecution of Armenians, and that's really shameful. And we look forward to his early retirement from Congress.
