Ukraine's Caspian Drone Attack: How Did Drones Fly Undetected?
When I read about this, I thought maybe there was a missile attack. But then I read that it was actually through drones. How did nobody notice these things going over their countries?
On July 25, 2026, Ukraine carried out a striking attack on Iranian ships in the Caspian Sea, claiming they were transporting weapons to Russia. The attack marks perhaps the most eastward escalation of the Ukraine War to date, prompting serious concern among analysts about a potential merger of the Ukraine and Iran conflicts into a wider regional war.
The immediate puzzle is logistical: how did long-range drones traverse thousands of kilometers and multiple countries’ airspace without being detected? Asbed notes that such an operation, spanning from Ukraine across the Black Sea, through Turkey or the South Caucasus, then to the Caspian, would require passage through radar networks and air defense systems belonging to NATO allies like Turkey, as well as Azerbaijan and Georgia. The fact that these drones hit their targets with precision suggests access to intelligence and surveillance resources only the United States possesses.
Hovik expands the analysis beyond geography to the broader strategic question: who benefits from merging these two wars? He points to several scenarios, including the possibility that Israeli bases in Azerbaijan could have been used as launch points. But the deeper implication is that such an operation likely requires U.S. satellite coverage and real-time intelligence support-a level of commitment that signals American interests in destabilizing the Middle Corridor trade route and deepening Europe’s dependence on American energy supplies. This aligns with the broader U.S. strategy around TRIPP (the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity), which aims to bypass Russian and Iranian influence over critical Asia-Europe trade links.

Asbed Bedrossian: So, Hovik, when I read about all this stuff, initially I thought maybe there was a missile attack, like a ballistic missile, which would have gotten from Ukraine to The shores of the Caspian in, I don't know, let's say 10 to 20 minutes or drones in about 18 hours. Which one? I mean, and then I read that it was actually through drones. How did this happen? How did nobody notice these things going over their countries?
Hovik Manucharyan: So yes, it was drones, and just like attacking the depths of Russia, you are able to accomplish these attacks through very careful coordination. You have to figure out which air Which air defenses are lighted up, which air defenses are blind currently, and craft a flight path that would avoid air defenses. But I find it very difficult to believe that you could send a long Still, you can send a long-range drone from Ukraine to Russia or around Russia's southern periphery, whereas if the depth of Russia is not that well protected because it's a soft Inside, with a hard shell, its borders are very well protected and watched, right? So it would have to pass through multiple stations, radar stations, and if that is a narrative.
